Every streamer has a story about the moment something private flashed on screen: the Discord popup with a friend's message, a browser tab you forgot was open on the second monitor, a notification from a banking app, the file explorer window you minimized "for a second". The clip gets made, the chat clips it, and it lives on forever.
Streaming is a different privacy problem from meetings. Your stream runs for hours, your audience is actively hunting for mistakes, and everything that appears on a captured display is recorded. Here is a setup that keeps personal windows out of the stream — a pre-stream routine, some OBS scene discipline, and a safety net that catches what you forget.
First: know what your stream actually captures
Most leaks happen through Display Capture, because it grabs the entire display — every window, every popup, every notification layered on top of your game or workspace. If your scene uses Display Capture (very common for single-PC setups, "streaming the whole desktop" styles, and just chatting segments), then anything that opens or pops up during the stream goes out live.
Game Capture and Window Capture are narrower: they show one application. If your scene only captures the game, a Discord popup on top of it is not part of that source. But the moment your scene rotates to Display Capture — a "show the desktop" segment, a browser segment, a second-monitor view — the full desktop is on the air.
That is why the checklist below is split into two parts: things you control before going live, and a safety net for the things that open themselves.
The pre-stream hygiene checklist
- Windows notifications off. Settings → System → Notifications, or Focus Assist (Win+A) set to priority-only. Notifications are the single most common leak.
- Discord and messaging apps: in-app notifications disabled or pointed at your second screen, and pop-ups disabled. A friend's message preview is personal content by definition.
- Browser hygiene. Stream research should happen in a dedicated browser profile with no logged-in personal accounts. Close anything with your address, invoices, or email visible.
- Second monitor discipline. If your scene ever shows the second monitor, treat it as on-air all the time. Banking, personal email, and photo libraries do not belong there during a stream session.
- Password managers locked. Auto-fill overlays appear when a login form gets focus — lock the vault before going live.
This list is boring, and it works — until the day you forget one item at 11 PM after a long day. Which is why the last layer matters.
OBS scene discipline
- Build dedicated scenes for each segment (game, just chatting, browser) and avoid ad-hoc "show desktop" scenes.
- Do not add a browser source with your logged-in sessions to live scenes; use a separate profile for anything you show.
- Remember the preview vs program distinction in Studio Mode: the preview pane is not broadcast, the program pane is. Double-check which one you are editing before sharing anything sensitive.
- If you review clips afterward, treat any accidental leak as a real incident: delete VODs and clips containing it, not just the live moment.
Scene discipline covers what you deliberately put on screen. It does nothing about a popup that opens by itself while you are mid-sentence.
